Small and easy to transport and store
One of the advantages of the Paper Armies approach is the ability to use them in small locations that typically you cannot game in.   Armies can be stored in small envelopes, game boards can be hung on a wall, or put under the bed, and a game can easily be placed in the trunk of a car for trips.

Just one example would be in a small apartment or dorm room - when mounted onto small magnets the Paper Armies pieces can be fastened to a metal backed board and hung on the wall.

Particularly with games that take a small number of pieces (DBA as an example) this approach can be ideal.

Building a Magnetic Board and Landscape Pieces

White board with masking tape           Two coats of green paint (thin)       Woods and hill with magnetic backing
  • Start with a typical office supply magnetic white board.
  • Mask off the edges with painting tape
  • Once the tape is attached use two or three green spray paint cans for "thin" coverage of the white board.
  • Make sure it is very thin, as the lighter the finish coat the cheaper the magnets needed to afix the PAPER ARMIE pieces.
  • When the paint is dry remove the white masking tape and hang on the wall with the clips provided in most board sets.
  • Note: in the USA these boards are normally sized at 22"x35" so for a standard DBA game you may need to reduce the setup zones by 1" on either edge.
  • For the woods, Built up areas, roads, hills, and other terrain feature I would recommend using paper and a thin magnetic backing material over the largest area possible of the material.  This assures a good magnetic attachment for any pieces in "rough going"

Materials to build these battle boards are:

  • 22"x35" whiteboard (magnetic) = $ 15.00 USD
  • 2 cans of Spray paint (enamel , greens) = $ 6.00
  • 1 set of magnetic business card backing = $ 7.00 (for 25 each 2"x3-1/2" size)
  • Sissors
  • Colored paper - rough textured

Note: There is a magnetic strip on the left side of the board that is there to define the board edge on that side (24")
